For Jack Dewitt, current Babson senior, deciding to concentrate in Marketing at Babson was a pretty easy decision. Though he described himself as someone who had always been into sales, his marketing concentration and expertise were already paying dividends for him long before graduation.
For Jack, the introductory sophomore class Principles of Marketing (SME) was his favorite and really solidified his interest in pursuing marketing further. Now, he’s riding out the last few weeks before graduation and then he’ll be shipping out to Arizona to go start his career at Axon – the world’s top provider of law enforcement and military safety technology.
What made you interested in Marketing?
"I’ve always been super into networking and building relationships with people primarily, and I wanted to learn how to provide goods and services for them. I gravitated toward marketing because it allowed me to take complex ideas and value propositions and communicate them to people in a way that’s easy for them to understand. Since technology is getting more and more complex, there’s so much to learn about and I think it’s super interesting."

How was your experience when looking for jobs?
"In the beginning I didn’t realize that the marketing skill set you develop will spill over into other things. I had spent so much time in class developing speaking skills, presentation skills, and the ability to convey my ideas. That made interviewing much easier.  Aside from the hard skills you actually get in marketing, the thing that helped me out the most was being able to articulate my ideas and communicate my strengths when I was interviewing. It will help me throughout my career."

How confident in your skills/abilities did you feel when you were interviewing for your new job?
"I did a lot of prep work for my interviews, and I actually got a prep kit to interview at Axon. The thing that separated me from my peers was that I had actually done so many real-life projects as part of my Babson curriculum that I never had to talk about the same project twice. I had such a diversity of experiences that for any given question I always had relevant experience to discuss. The thing that’s amazing about Babson is that you get the same textbook knowledge in concepts and theory that you’d get anywhere else but then you actually get to put the knowledge to work to do something real."

What are your career goals?
"My dad’s actually a Babson alum, and one of the things that he’s done since his time here is create two companies – one of which went public and the other was acquired. I aspire to do the same one day and maybe even do more than my father. Since I was old enough to understand how big of an achievement that is, I’ve always wanted to achieve that amount of success for myself. "
